It is actually altitude that has shown to have a profound effect on birth weight. Babies born in Denver, which is about 5000 feet above sea level, have a lower birth weight than those born at sea level. By comparing these numbers to those babies born in the Andes where the altitude is three times that of Denver and where the birth weight does not change, you can gain a glimpse of the powerful benefits associated with Maca. The Importance of Folic acid or Folate. What is the difference?
Folic Acid is a vitamin-like substance that is widely understood to be part of the B-vitamin family, formerly known as Vitamin B9. It works, synergistically with the other members of the B family, such as Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Methylcobalamin, Pantothenic Acid and Biotin to help maintain proper functioning of nerves, brain, heart, skin, digestive system and metabolism, along with supporting the production of certain enzymes and hormones. Higher levels are necessary for normal nerve, spinal and brain development of the fetus and the prevention of neural-tube birth defects.

It is highly recommended that not only pregnant woman, but men and woman that plan on conceiving supplement their daily diet with between 400 to 1000 mcg of Folic Acid daily. In fact, it is absolutely essential that pregnant woman supplement with at least 400 mcg daily during the first trimester of pregnancy to ensure protection against neural-tube birth defects. In some rare cases of the inability to absorb Folic Acid, 2-3 mg. may be prescribed by your doctor. Additionally, high consumption of Folic Acid alone can cause a deficiency in Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin). That is why it is very important to consume a product that is abundant in all the B-vitamins. This ensures proper absorption and utilization, individually and collectively, as nature intended.

Folic Acid is actually the synthetic form of Folate. Studies show however that it is better absorbed, and more efficiently utilized in the blood than its natural form. One reason for this may be our body’s inability to separate it from the protein and fiber component of the food and efficiently transport it across membranes into the blood. You would need to consume approximately 160mcg of Folate to equal 100mcg of Folic acid.
